Eco Atelier, Calabasas
A full redesign brought this Calabasas home to life in timeless Spanish Modern style, from the exterior architecture to every detail of the softscape and hardscape. Our goal: modernize the entire space while keeping that vibrant SoCal-Spanish drought tolerant character alive through bold color and texture. Experimentation was allowed - with unexpected material and plant combinations—like cactus mixed with leucospermum and bougainvillea—and we’re loving the result.
By adding new garden walls along the front of the property’s length, we were able to visually expand the space, as well as to create a boundary for the space. The new sand finish concrete driveway with pebble gaps allows for the driveway to be permeable and connect the spaces throughout the drought tolerant garden areas all around. In addition to showcasing the existing Olive tree, Many new trees were incorporated including a new Olive tree, Strawberry tree, and multiple Cassia leptophylla. Other plants such as Blue Glow agave, Blue Flame agave, Lomandra, and Convolvolus create the mixture of structure and softness that the plant palette create.
The backyard space was conceptualized to create many living spaces as well as creating a spa like environment to escape the chaos of every day. The built-in BBQ, metal pergola with bamboo roofing and large patio area are perfect for entertaining. Oversized metal doors open from the interior living areas onto a striking graphic firepit, anchoring the outdoor space while visually connecting it with the interior. Every element works together to craft a sanctuary that is as functional as it is beautiful.
Just down the dual cantilevered staircases that feature a tile detail on the rise, we have completed a full renovation of the pool area with updates to both the pool interior as well as exterior. The existing deck was reclad with TimberTech composite decking that was selected not only for its sustainable qualities but also its fire-retardant ones. Some materials were preserved such as the bluestone facing on the walls of the pool, but new tile for the centerpiece was introduced to add texture and to add a sense of light. The backyard’s plant palette mirrors the front yard while introducing additional succulents, a low hedge of dwarf Indian Hawthorne, and a striking Bay Laurel hedge along the perimeter. Its serene blue-green tones bring a quiet, sophisticated richness to the space.
No Eco Landscape project is complete without carefully curated low-voltage lighting. At night, it bathes the landscape in a soft, inviting glow, highlighting textures and plantings while creating an atmosphere of warmth, elegance, and understated security.
