Maison Soleil, hancock Park
This stunning Spanish property was an absolute dream to design and install. Our client was an absolute dream to work with – focused, detail oriented, and committed to quality – which made it possible to bring our shared vision to life. A thoughtful mix of textures and colors, balanced with intentional negative space, has transformed the front yard into a true sanctuary and the backyard into the ultimate retreat.
Honoring the Spanish style of the home, it was important to retain some existing elements, such as the Saltillo tile landings. These were thoughtfully combined with new features, including limestone stair treads, bluestone steppers, and Yosemite pebble. The mix of materials adds rich texture, allowing the exterior to maintain a sense of history while introducing a modern, drought-tolerant aesthetic. The stunning fountain is a focal for the front space, welcoming hummingbirds daily and infusing the space with both tranquility and liveliness. The simple plant palette includes Agave Blue Glow, Little Ollie Dwarf Olives, Westringea, Aloe striata and Kangaroo Paw for a pop of rich color. The entry staircase is flanked by beautifully distressed planters containing Desmettiana and draped with String of Pearl, adding both a sense of history and vertical presence to the approach.
The Spanish modern drought tolerant backyard offers the perfect balance to the more stark front yard – here you find an inviting colorful retreat to relax in, and a beautiful space to enjoy with family and friends. Saltillo landings, Bluestone steppers and Yosemite pebble guide you throughout the space, while sand finish concrete pads have been introduced in areas such as lounge seating and pool deck. The soft varied colors of this stunning Redwood fence complement the planting palette, demonstrating that fencing and gates can be more than just functional elements. Beyond providing privacy and security, they can introduce color, texture, and a striking backdrop for the landscape, as this fence does so gracefully. Thoughtfully placed distressed pottery, echoing the pieces in the front yard, are combined with a diverse selection of trees and plantings, to brings color and define distinct spaces throughout the backyard landscape. Finally, the artful rattan lanterns, hanging at varied heights from the large tree above the oversized stone firepit, add a magical touch, illuminating the yard beautifully by day and at night, when bistro, landscape, and lantern lighting cast a warm, inviting glow throughout the space.
